Masina Wright was born in the South Pacific on American Samoa. An unusual birthplace begins the story of an unusual physician. Dr. Wright moved to Toronto after Middlebury College to attend the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. There she owned a multidisciplinary clinic in Toronto for eleven years doing Naturopathic primary care, fertility support and LGBT health. Her first medical training on transition at Sherbourne Health Center in 2007 where she met Dr. Carys Massarella, one of her mentors in transgender health and medicine. Masina moved to Portland, Maine, USA in 2011 for love, and graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, class of 2019. She is now in the high desert of New Mexico at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, about to start her PGY2 year in Internal Medicine with a focus on trans health. What an adventure this life is! She started with the Integrative Medicine AMSA scholar program in 2015 and took the lead in designing a new scholars program in Transgender Health along with the Global Education Initiative of WPATH in 2016. Dr. Wright was awarded the AMSA-GLMA Health Achievement award for this course in 2019! This will be the third year running for medical students who are interested in learning more about gender diversity in medicine its intersections. We have had students from as far as Poland and Puerto Rico so far! We love our international vibe and welcome health care students from around the world to join us this year.

Program Overview

Individuals who identify as transgender and/or who may be gender nonconforming in their identity expression are at risk for numerous health disparities. These individuals are increasingly presenting in the healthcare setting, likely the result of the increased visibility of transgender individuals in the media and culture; however, physician training about gender identity and expression related phenomena in all humans is markedly lacking in medical schools. This course has been designed with leaders in this rapidly expanding field and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), with the intention to improve how we as physicians can best support and maintain the health of our diverse patient populations.

Start Date: October 7, 2020
End Date: April 7, 2021
Meeting Times: 7:00 - 9:00 PM ET, twice a month on Wednesdays

Why will I LOVE this Program?

Are you passionate about primary care, pediatrics, endocrinology, internal medicine, psychiatry or surgery? Because this Scholars Program will automatically improve your ability to relate to patients – and examine your own assumptions about gender and gender identity. The more we, as physicians, explore our own biases, values and cultural assumptions, the more we can provide culturally humble care that can improve our patients’ health and wellness.

If you are already someone who is passionate about gender identity, transgender health and advocacy, sexual identity and queer global medicine, this is the course for you! It is an opportunity to be introduced to leaders in this field and get a solid foundation in this rapidly growing topic.
