Wellness on a Budget

Money can be tight during the holiday season. After the federal funding cuts to food assistance programs during the government shutdown, many of us felt what it’s like to grocery shop on an even tighter budget than usual. Here are some tips for a healthy grocery trip that you can afford:
- Have a plan: Explore recipes that utilize the same ingredients, and make a grocery list. This will help you to buy ingredients you will use without eating the same meal every day.
- Stick to the perimeter of the store. If you stick to the perimeter, you’ll find staples, like produce, the deli counter, and dairy. These are healthy staples that are often more affordable than the packaged goods you’ll find in the center aisles. Â
- Pick plant-based protein: Plant-based proteins like beans and legumes are nutritionally dense, affordable, and have a super long shelf life!
- Frozen food: Frozen vegetables are flash frozen when they are at their freshest and will last longer than fresh produce, making them a great way to keep nutritionally dense produce around.Â
- Compare prices: Be flexible with where you shop and compare prices; the same items are often available at much different prices depending on where you shop and the brand you choose.
Remember, don’t shop hungry and get creative!
Happy Holidays!

- HOW?
Take 5 deep breaths while holding your attention on the palms of your hands and on the soles of your feet - WHAT DOES THIS DO PHYSIOLOGICALLY?
Perfusion of blood and oxygenation will be increased to the extremities, and a state of safety will be registered in the nervous system. We can consciously alter the stress/threat response in the nervous system, which causes circulation to be pulled in the core and vital organs for protection.
