I AM A LOOKING TO GO

The journey to becoming a physician can feel disconnected across different stages. AMSA NextGen creates a connected mentorship pipeline that supports future physicians from pre-med through residency and beyond.

Pre-medical students receive guidance from medical student mentors on MCAT preparation, medical school applications, interviews, building relevant experience, and transitioning to medical school. Medical students receive mentorship from AMSA alumni as they navigate medical education, explore specialties, prepare for residency, grow as leaders, and build professional networks.

Mentors and mentees are thoughtfully matched based on career interests, goals, experience, medical school interests, communication preferences, time zones, and shared experiences when voluntarily disclosed. Each match is designed to foster a meaningful connection that supports the mentee’s unique journey.

Goal 1: Create a Multi-Generational AMSA Community

Connect members across different stages of the medical journey and strengthen relationships between pre-medical students, medical students, and alumni.

Goal 2: Provide Accessible Mentorship

Give pre-medical students access to medical students who can provide firsthand, relatable guidance about the path to medicine.

Goal 3: Develop Medical Student Mentors

Provide medical students with mentorship from AMSA alumni while simultaneously developing their leadership and mentoring skills.

Goal 4: Engage AMSA Alumni

Create meaningful opportunities for alumni to remain connected to AMSA and contribute their experience to the development of future physicians.

Goal 5: Create a Sustainable Mentorship Pipeline

Develop a system in which participants can progress through the mentorship pipeline and eventually become mentors themselves.

Goal 6: Strengthen AMSA’s Leadership Pipeline

Create future AMSA leaders by giving members opportunities to participate, mentor, lead, and eventually give back to the organization.

AMSA NextGen will operate as a one-month mentorship sprint. Each mentor will be paired with a pre-medical or medical student mentee.

Mentor Commitment

Each mentor will participate in:

  • 4 mentor-mentee conversations
  • 1 conversation per week
  • 30–45 minutes per conversation
  • Virtual format through video call or phone call
  • Suggested weekly topics and discussion prompts

The structured format keeps the commitment manageable while allowing mentors and mentees enough time to build a meaningful relationship.
