I AM A LOOKING TO GO

Leader Spotlight: Oscar Cazares

March 08, 2022

Meet Oscar!

Today, our spotlight is on Oscar Cazares—an impactful and inspiring AMSA leader!

Oscar began his AMSA journey in 2016 as a premedical student member. The next year he was elected as Chapter President of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley AMSA Chapter.

The chapter carried out many impactful service events with Oscar at the helm. These included Autism Awareness Day, a Diabetes Prevention Community Health Fair, a Be the Match donor drive, and more—which earned awards from their university and from the National Marrow Donor Program.

This was a strong start for the AMSA RGV Chapter, which continued to run programs piloted during Oscar’s leadership year and added new ones to serve their community. In 2019, the AMSA RGV Chapter won the Paul R. Wright Chapter Success Award at our annual Convention!

In 2020, the chapter’s successful in-person community events were put on hold due to COVID. Oscar stayed true to his dedication to community education and shifted to a digital campaign focused on disabilities and accommodations in U.S. higher education. This project won the Best Poster honor in its category at AMSA’s 2021 Poster Session.

Oscar has continued to receive recognition from his university as a uniquely impactful leader. He leveled up at AMSA as well by joining the national leadership team as 2021-2022 Wellness & Student Life Programming Coordinator.

On his plans from here—“This school year, I continue my education at UTRGV as a post-baccalaureate student. I plan to obtain certain political science and public administration credentials before attending medical school. My ultimate goal is to take on leadership roles in charitable international organizations through which I wish to provide free medical services to the indigent in developing countries, as well as strive for the improvement of the countries’ public health systems through advocacy for policy change,” Oscar said.

We certainly can’t wait to see what Oscar accomplishes next! If you’re driven to inspire change in your community like Oscar, explore AMSA leadership opportunities!
