I AM A LOOKING TO GO

Medical Malpractice Is a Concern for Students, Too

September 13, 2022

Every doctor trains hard to provide the best care possible. But things don’t always go according to plan. When a patient or their family is dissatisfied with a medical treatment or outcome, a lawsuit is often the result.

Medical malpractice lawsuits can happen to anyone, including physicians-in-training. When a malpractice incident occurs, any organization or professional involved in treatment may be named in the lawsuit, meaning that even if you weren’t directly involved in an incident, you may still need to hire a lawyer.

Most medical students know that they will eventually need to obtain malpractice insurance to protect against malpractice risks when they begin their careers. But what many don’t know is that malpractice insurance is also available to physicians-in-training. In fact, many teaching hospitals and clinics now require it.

In partnership with AMSA, Lockton Affinity developed the Academic Medical Professional Insurance Program (AMPI) to help protect students against the risk of a lawsuit while meeting their malpractice insurance requirements.

Doctors and students have different needs, so malpractice insurance for doctors-in-training works differently, too. To meet these needs, AMPI offers affordable short-term coverage to students participating in clinical electives, rotations and observations.

The program offers customizable short-term options from two weeks to two months and policy limits of $1 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate, the standard requirement for medical students.

AMPI’s worldwide coverage starts as low as $230 per month, with occurrence coverage that protects students from claims occurring during the policy period, even those brought after a rotation has ended.

Plus, thanks to the partnership between AMSA and AMPI, all AMSA members also receive a preferred rate of 10% off AMPI standard policy pricing.
