Sterling, VA – December 12, 2016: Today, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) announced the debut of its new Leadership Program developed to augment medical school curriculum. AMSA recognized the need for professional training and development that extends far beyond the classroom and asserts this new program will bridge the gap between clinical and non-clinical skills required to become a successful physician.

Medical schools are dedicated to the cultivation of physicians-in-training, preparing them for the world of medicine to diagnose and treat patients. But does it prepare future physicians to tackle the professional landscape ahead of them? Beyond the core medical aspects of the job are key interpersonal and business matters that are either unknown or can be overwhelming to understand and navigate without guidance.

“The classroom is where we learn to become physicians – it’s why we’re there. But we don’t know what we aren’t taught, which is exactly why AMSA created a program to help expand students’ skills beyond the classroom and into their careers as emerging leaders in the field of medicine,” says Kelly Thibert, DO, AMSA National President.

AMSA’s Leadership Program is an eight week series of live and on-demand webinars, online reading and knowledge assessments. From mastering effective communication and time management skills to the importance of understanding how to manage finances, the program aims to provide medical students leadership, professional and non-clinical skills to help them navigate other critical aspects of their career.

The Leadership Program is included at no charge to all domestic medical student AMSA members. All interested members must register to reserve their seat in this inaugural program kick off. Learn more and register at https://www.amsa.org/events/new-amsa-leadership-program/.
