Sterling, VA—The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the oldest and largest independent organization of physicians-in-training in the United States, advocating for quality, affordable healthcare for more than 60 years, welcomes the new Affordable Care Act (ACA) open enrollment for health insurance. AMSA urges those seeking coverage to consider the affordable options tailored to individuals or employers.
Beginning this week, all U.S. citizens can buy new health insurance plans that fit their needs and budgets. The Health Insurance Marketplaces cover doctor visits, hospitalizations, maternity care, emergency room visits and prescriptions. Preventative services are free of charge and nobody can be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions. Those who sign up by December 15, 2013 will have coverage starting January 1, 2014.
“As physicians-in-training, we can guide patients through the process of open enrollment and its tremendous benefits,” says Dr. Nida Degesys, AMSA national president. “AMSA members are part of the professional medical force responsible for ensuring the full coverage of our population.”
The ACA will provide comprehensive health care reform that works for patients and physicians: expanding coverage, lowering costs and upholding quality. The Affordable Health Care for America Act expands coverage to 96 percent of Americans and includes a public health insurance option. AMSA supports expansion of access and coverage to include a public option and investments in primary care physician workforce development.
