AMSA’s Post-Election Outlook: What’s in Store?

Leading up to the general election on November 3, it’s safe to say that most of America is wondering “What’s in Store?” as we move past this election. Many claim that this is the most influential election of our lifetimes. Some believe that the outcome is bound to be contested and warn that this election will spark worsened civil unrest. Yet others believe we are on the verge of a reawakening of democracy and an expansion of the Unalienable Rights envisioned by our founders of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness — truly for All. In the midst of a global pandemic and a national reckoning for racial injustice, there is no doubt that we stand poised for change at this political time.

No matter the outcome of the election, we at AMSA are ready to come together in community, to discuss the current situation and our hopes and plans moving forward. We are committed to standing for what we’ve always stood for: a world where healthcare is accessible, medicine is affordable, and systems support the diversity we see around us.

We understand that, no matter the outcome, we stand poised in the midst of a pandemic to fight for more equitable and just access to care.

“With so much loss and still more at stake, the 2020 presidential election is the opportune moment for the American electorate to embrace change for the better, to reject the stagnancy of complacency, to exchange a view bereft of intention with a vision of progress, and to rejoin the global community in the pursuit of a more equitable and sustainable future.”

In this context, AMSA National President Ali Bokhari DO, MPH will moderate a discussion with past AMSA Presidents Jay Bhatt DO, Isaiah Cochran MD, Lauren Hughes MD, MPH, MSc and Kelly Thibert DO, MPH. He will invite questions from current AMSA members and alumni. Even if the outcome of the presidential election is not yet clear, this event will serve as an opportunity to be together, to share what we are seeing in our communities, and to discuss the opportunities that we see ahead.
