Honoring the 50th Anniversary of Roe V. Wade
and Abortion Providers Who Care for Our Communities

Tomorrow, January 22, we will mark and honor the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. A year ago, in marking the 49th anniversary, we noted the likelihood that Roe might not survive intact to its 50th, and indeed, the Dobbs decision issued in June 2022, reversed Roe entirely. As we stated in our previous post, while we grieve the loss of the constitutional protections granted in Roe, and acknowledge the fragility of the system that allowed this to happen, we refuse defeat and defiantly celebrate and honor the labor and the struggle of so many who fought and continue to fight so hard to ensure that everyone is able to access abortion care whenever and wherever they need it. On this 50th anniversary of Roe, we invite you to join us in uplifting those who continue to provide abortions and in highlighting the fact that abortion care is normal, regular, and essential care.

With that, we are excited to officially launch our 2nd annual AMSA Art and Appreciation for Abortion Providers that will run from tomorrow, January 22nd through March 10, 2023. March 10th signifies the day in 1993 when Dr. David Gunn was murdered by a white supremacist anti-abortion extremist. In honor and gratitude towards Dr. Gunn, this day is now celebrated by allies across the US as Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.

Over these next 46 days, in partnership with The Abortion Library, new art and expressions of appreciation will be posted each day and be accompanied by facts about abortion and suggestions for actions you can take, and share, to help protect and expand abortion access. If there is anything you wish to highlight, we would LOVE to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to rhp@amsa.org. And if you have artwork to submit, you can submit here.

Also, we would like to highlight the 2023 Women’s March #BiggerThanRoe that will take place around the country tomorrow, January 22, 2023. For additional details click here. Find  sister marches in your area here
