Guns Are Not the Answer! Statement on the Michigan High School Shooting

December 01, 2021

Written by AMSA-GoodRx Education and Advocacy Fellows Peter Papaioannou & Remy Arnot

Yesterday, another senseless massacre took place at Oxford High School in Michigan. As medical students, we are horrified at the loss of life and by how often people in our nation turn to guns for answers.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed; we know they will carry that pain forever. To those wounded, we wish for healing of both their physical and mental injuries, and know they too will carry scars both inside and out for the rest of their lives.

As people living in communities across the US, we see the death, injury, and violence that comes all too often at the end of a gun.

As future physicians, we know we will be called to care for victims, and tell loved ones some won’t be coming home.

As AMSA members, we share the understanding that there are common sense, Public Health solutions to the gun deaths, injuries, and violence plaguing our nation.

As AMSA Education and Advocacy Fellows, we invite you to explore resources developed by our Medical Students for Gun Safety Campaign to learn more about our country’s gun violence epidemic and how we all can help put an end to it.
