Members of the Board of Trustees employ skills in strategic organizational thinking, long-term planning, resource allocation, and advocacy to steward AMSA’s resources and participate in all board-level decisions of the Association.
As national officers, the President, President Elect, Vice President-Elect for Membership, Vice President for Program Development, Vice President for Leadership Development and Secretary share some common responsibilities. These duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Serve as a leader and develop new leaders.
- Provide support and serve as a resource for other AMSA leaders.
- Attend and actively participate in all meetings of the Board of Trustees (BOT) and Annual Convention.
- Attend Building on Foundations — our annual National Leader convening where we craft strategic plans for the year ahead.
- Conscientiously and successfully transition with his/her successor.
- Represent AMSA publicly and to external organizations at the request of the President.
Qualifications and Requirements for Candidates for BOT positions (per AMSA’s Constitution & Bylaws Article VII. Section 1 and the Internal Affairs Section 1.B & C):
- All officers and trustees must be medical student members of the Association unless otherwise noted.
- Candidates for President-Elect, Vice President-Elect for Membership, Vice President for Leadership Development, and Vice President for Program Development offices shall have had prior AMSA leadership experience as either a national Trustee or Officer. In the event that less than two candidates with this experience requirement have declared their candidacy 30 days prior to election, the candidacies of medical student members without this prior experience shall be accepted.
