An Online Learning Community and Course (October 2016 – February 2017)
Thank you for your interest in participating in the Just Medicine Scholars Program. Registration is now closed for all courses offered for the 2016-2017 year.
The Just Medicine Scholars Program will encourage students to critically examine the current pharmaceutical and device industry. Medical students and professionals are constantly in contact with this industry, but generally have minimal knowledge regarding its influence on healthcare and healthcare professionals. This program will expand student’s knowledge not only on industry interactions, but also the bigger picture of global access to medication, conflict of interest in medical education, and the evidence behind evidence-based medicine.
What should I expect?
This course will give students an opportunity to learn from experts around the United States and become engaged with advocacy at their own institutions. It will provide you a new way of thinking about topics beyond what is discussed in the classroom. You will learn why doctors prescribe medications the way they do, and why drugs are so expensive. You will engage in discussions with other pre-med and medical students from around the world and challenge yourself to think critically. You will complete a project that involves policy change at your own university or medical school, and you will learn what it means to be a student advocate.
This course involves attending a 1.5-2-hour webinar twice per month. Each webinar has pre-session assignment (one or two articles, videos or other types of media) which should take about an hour per week of preparation, and a post-session assignment (a short written paragraph- no more than 30 minutes) as well as pre and post- session quizzes (not graded, just for learning purposes!). Each student is required to complete a final project, which should require about an hour per week of time commitment.
Why will I LOVE this Scholars Program?
You will love this course because it will be unlike anything you’ve ever done before! It will give you a new perspective on medicine and teach you to think critically about medication and how doctors prescribe. You will get to work with students around the world and engage in fascinating discussions. You will become an advocate over the course of this Scholars Program and learn how to make change happen at your institution!
