An Online Learning Community and Course (October 2016 – February 2017)
Thank you for your interest in participating in the Advocacy Scholars Program. Registration is now closed for all courses offered for the 2016-2017 year.
The Advocacy Scholars Program is a five-month program designed to produce future physicians with the skills to become forces of social change! Students will engage in webinars, readings, and discussions that promote knowledge of community engagement, the social mission of medicine, social power structures, community organizing, and advocacy skills. Throughout the course, scholars will develop an advocacy project based around a proposed piece of legislation in order to apply the skills they are learning. The Scholars Program will include committed time for reflection to allow the scholar to develop a deep understanding of how they will engage with their community as a physician and what advocacy means to them.
What should I expect?
The Scholars Program will meet eight times on Tuesdays at 8PM Eastern Time from October 2016 to February 2017 for 1.5 hours via a video conference platform with the first half of the session including a talk from an expert in healthcare advocacy and the second half of the session including a facilitated discussion. Before each webinar session, scholars will be assigned a short set of readings, videos, or other materials and a brief writing assignment. Periodically, scholars will be asked to submit materials related to their final project. In addition to completing assignments and a final project, scholars are expected to participate in the session discussion by contributing thoughtful and respectful ideas, opinions, and questions.
In addition to attending the eight 1.5-hour webinar sessions, scholars will be expected to complete assignments and work on their final projects. This work is expected to take an average of 1-2 hours per week, with some variability depending on how the scholar chooses to structure their final project. Readings and preparatory assignments before each session are not expected to take more than an hour and a half. Over the course of the program, scholars are expected to spend an average of 6-8 hours per month on their final project.
Why will I LOVE this Scholars Program?
This Scholars Program brings together individuals from across the country who are passionate about activism, social justice, and creating space for medical students and physicians in advocacy. Together through an advocacy-related project, we will develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to build a career as an effective physician-advocate.
