Laura Shepherd is studying at the University of Hawaii at Hilo where she majors in biology with a biomedical focus and minors in chemistry. She is currently conducting research at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. The focus of her studies is to develop a sero-diagnosis technique for the emergent tropical disease, Rat Lungworm Disease, using an ELISA. This research is the first of its kind within the United States. Ms. Shepherd is also learning about eastern medicine through the art of healing in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Hawaiian Lomi Lomi. In her free time, she enjoys ballet, off-roading and playing the harp. Laura’s journey with AMSA began by founding the first AMSA chapter on her island with the goal of creating a supportive and informative environment for premedical students. Now, the chapter focuses on partnering with local organizations and the John A. Burns School of Medicine to inspire the next generation and help provide free healthcare to underserved, rural communities.
