Marcela Betancourt is a third-year medical student at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She obtained her BA in Business Economics from Indiana University at Fort Wayne, IN. Prior to beginning medical school, she worked for several years as a certified nursing assistant and home health aide. She also volunteered at a clinic for medically uninsured individuals, providing care to local patients and assisting in Spanish translation when needed. She serves as the Race, Ethnicity, and Culture in Action Committee Chair for AMSA at her local chapter. She became interested in advocacy work after attending AMSA’s National Convention in 2019. In the future, she plans to continue to advocate for accessible healthcare, reducing the barriers among disadvantaged minorities, and sexual and reproductive health education. With this position, she hopes to raise awareness about climate change and create policies in order to help stop the damage, and lead a more Eco-friendly life.
