American International Medical University
“To affect change in the medical education process and to make it more responsive to the needs of students and society & the development of clinical skills and interactive approach of medical students with community at large”.
How did your chapter support this objective?
“AMSA at AIMU identified the necessity for ‘development of clinical skills and interactive approach of medical students with community at large’. This would serve as an effective step in making the medical education process more responsive to the needs of students and society. Heading in this direction of approach, our chapter structured and organized various outreach programs and teaching sessions.
Outreach programs conducted by AMSA AIMU always have a basic scheme with two sections. The first section would be a teaching and evaluation by professionals is the field. This would help the students to attain focus on the issue at hand. The next section would be application of the objectives taught, under expert guidance. This could be well explained with “The world Diabetes Day” camp organized during November. A lecture was organized to inculcate students with the essential concepts of dealing with Diabetes in the location of St.Lucia. Following this lecture, a free public outreach camp was organized under the guidance of a practicing Endocrinologist. This camp would screen public for pre diabetic tendencies and then provide support by organizing professional consultations and counseling for management of diabetes. Local public were screened for pre diabetic tendencies like BMI measurements, Random Blood Glucose measurements, Hypertension screening, lifestyle and family history. Through such programs AMSA at AIMU aims at achieving its objective of bringing a change in medical education process that is more responsive to the needs of students and society.
Basic clinical and surgical skills are not formally taught to students at lower levels of medical education. But, these skills are of prime importance to any physician. Aiming at this, “skills lab” program was launched by AMSA at AIMU. This program included a clinical and surgical skills curriculum including various aspects like medication administration, diagnostic skills, aseptic and antiseptic procedures, suturing, anaphylactic prophylaxis and, so on. A program conducted over 3 months duration with more than 10 practicing physicians in respective fields training students. This opportunity gave all students a boost to learn more and be enthusiastic about medicine.
Practical aspect of any form of education is always attractive and interesting to a student. Adding this aspect of training to the grueling schedules and complex goals of a medical student’s career has helped us achieve huge support from all the students at AIMU in showing great interest towards AMSA AIMU chapter’s objectives and activities.”
What does the leadership team to contribute to the success of the chapter as a whole?
“At AIMU, the AMSA chapter has been granted full flexibility and support when it comes to improving participation in academics. A bigger support and guidance from various members of the AMSA national, including efficient guidance from leaders of the various “Scholars programs” that our chapter members took part in, which provided surplus insight. These resources combined with the local chapter leaders’ efforts have helped maintain a maximum participation in all events that are organized. To make this happen, our chapter believes in accommodating all those who are interested, instead of limiting opportunity. The combined effort of our chapter leaders working tirelessly as a team has made this possible. All students are engaged to participate and redeemed with knowledge and certification for participation. This is encouraged further, by one-on-one interaction with members, to create awareness of our objectives to a greater extent.
Leadership transition process for AMSA chapter at AIMU has been greatly influenced by AMSA national. An ‘AMSA AIMU Annual Convention’ inspired by AMSA national, has been designed for leadership transition. This transition process elects new chapter leaders every year during the month of July. The new elect-leaders will be trained under the existing board to take charge from September. During this period, AMSA annual report for the ongoing year is presented by the existing chapter leaders. This process helps AMSA AIMU chapter in maintaining an easy transition of leadership and also to maintain transparency to all members about the functioning of our chapter.
AMSA AIMU chapter mainly focuses on its objectives like providing an environment that supports the creative ideas through competition and recognition, maintaining its status as an independent organization unaffected by any other governance bodies, increasing knowledge of health information among members and the general public and so on. Our chapter functions for the benefit of physicians-in-training by regarding the needs of the students maintaining that as the highest priority.”
