Yokaira is a fourth-year medical student at Universidad Iberoamericana School of Medicine, located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She was born in Dominican Republic and raised in Orlando, Florida. Her AMSA journey began as a local leader, with her first attempt at running for Vice President of her local chapter, which she did not get elected for. Since giving up was not an option, that did not stop her from running again for President.
During her term as president, she worked very hard to increase membership in her chapter and decided to run and got elected for International Regional Director. Due to her exemplary leadership skills throughout the year, she received the James Slayton Award for Leadership Excellence at AMSA’s Annual Convention.
Yokaira is now your International Trustee, doing the best she can to support AMSA membership, student engagement and being a part of the Board of Trustees. She aspires to continue showing students the importance on leadership as a future physician, based on her experience in AMSA at a local and national level and exposing all the benefits that AMSA has available for students as a support system throughout medical school.
