Towards Equity & Empowerment
in Medicine & Women's Health

MAJOR PROJECTS

  • Women's Empowerment Institute
This amazing 5-day institute brings together phenomenal women medical students from across the country to engage in leadership development, skill-building, and knowledge development. These women will then use these new skills to educate, advocate for, and empower their local communities. This inspiring weekend will breathe new life into your projects and even your reasons for going to medical school. Applications available in late September 2007.

  • Regional Mini-WEI
Think WEI sounds incredible? Have you attended WEI and want to bring it to your school? We've prepared a guidebook for how to bring WEI to the regional or even school level. If you're interested in finding out how, contact Abimbola.

  • Recognizing Women Leaders in Medicine First Annual "Raising Our Voices" Award!
We will recognize outstanding women leaders in medicine this year at the National Convention in Houston. We will take nominations from our student membership across the country and will select 20 honorees, of whom one will be chosen as the award winner. Their contributions to the medical field and/or women's health will stand as exemplars and inspiration for aspiring women doctors everywhere. Nominate an inspiring woman leader!

  • Work-Life Balance and Financial Planning
No, it's not just a women's issue. Work-life balance is crucial to women's and men's success in medical school, residency, and practice. Let us help you identify speakers near you who can give advice and tips on balancing the many demands of a medical career with family, partners, and friends.

Financial planning isn't something you learn in medical school, but it can make or break a private practice, or even a loan repayment schedule! Let us help you to find a speaker or put together a presentation for your classmates.

WOMEN IN MEDICINE CADUCEUS

Although women equal and surpass men in number of entering medical school students, there's still a great gender disparity with regards to leadership positions within medicine, such as division chiefs, medical school deans and tenured faculty at medical training institutions. In addition, sexism is a reality for many female medical students, in the classroom as well as on the wards. This pin serves as a reminder that women belong, excel and are needed both as role models and leaders within the field of medicine. Pins are 1.5" with silver metal base and can be ordered by individual school chapters. Order now through the AMSA Resource Center.
