Women's Health Action Committee

Towards Equity & Empowerment
in Medicine & Women's Health

Mission Statement
The Women's Health Action Committee innovatively advances equity and empowerment in medicine and women's health. We identify individual schools, communities and social partners to build a strong national network of educators, advocates and visionary leaders in matters of women's health. We work to establish WHAC as an integral part of AMSA and as a credible and supportive resource for individuals and organizations actively promoting similar goals. Through our national model, we strive to educate and empower both medical professionals and community members to act locally while fostering new leaders on a regional and national level.

OUR VISION

Our major projects this year include recognizing women leaders in medicine through a photo exhibit and award, addressing domestic violence through education and advocacy, advocating for common-sense reproductive health policy, addressing the increasing spread of HIV/AIDS among women both here and abroad, educating medical students about women prisoner's health, and motivating medical students to address women's health issues at their schools.

Raising Our Voices: Women Leaders in Medicine.

AMSA will recognize several inspirational women physician leaders at this year's annual convention through an interactive display exhibit. We will also present an award to one outstanding woman leader in medicine.

    WOMEN IN MEDICINE CADUCEUS

Although women equal and surpass men in number of entering medical school students, there's still a great gender disparity with regards to leadership positions within medicine, such as division chiefs, medical school deans and tenured faculty at medical training institutions. In addition, sexism is a reality for many female medical students, in the classroom as well as on the wards. This pin serves as a reminder that women belong, excel and are needed both as role models and leaders within the field of medicine. Pins are 1.5" with silver metal base and can be ordered by individual school chapters. Order now through the AMSA Resource Center.
