Summary of project The Stanford AMSA Mentorship Program was developed to help create a new, more diverse generation of health care professionals. Stanford medical students serve as mentors to undergraduates from both Stanford University and Foothill Community College in order to promote and facilitate the pre-med path to medicine. The mentorship program strives to break down educational barriers and promote diversity in medicine by providing a peer-to-peer pre-medical support system that will allow for greater access to clinical opportunities and informational resources while at the same time serving the community at large. With an increasingly competitive medical school application process, many pre-med undergraduates face the challenge of navigating the path to medicine without proper guidance or a solid support system. In addition, at many community colleges without an affiliated medical school, there is little opportunity for exposure to the medical field and often inadequate access to medically related resources. To overcome these educational barriers, the Stanford AMSA chapters have created a peer-to-peer mentorship program where 15 Stanford medical student mentors are each paired with both a Stanford University and Foothill College undergraduate. By connecting undergraduates and medical students from different socioeconomic and educational backgrounds, the program serves as a catalyst for a new generation of physicians.

Project advertising To recruit community college students, we contacted their premed advisor in order to set up a table at their school and speak in the science classes. At Stanford SOM we sent out emails and recruited mentors through word of mouth. For the Stanford Undergrads, we advertised on the premed listserve as well as at the Annual All-Premed Mixer (an event for all undergraduate premed organizations on campus).

Lessons/suggestions We need to improve communication between mentors to promote collaboration. Also, we need to plan events further in advance to increase participation.

Comments The undergraduate All-Premed Mixer was critical in advertising to Stanford premeds.
