Summary of project The Global Health committee hosted a Global health potluck to raise funds for the Madness Against Malaria campaign.Students and faculty were asked to bring a dish of their choice to the potluck and receive a discount (from $5 to $2) on the buffet in return. Others paid a little bit more to enjoy the global cuisine. Each dish was designated a number for recipe contest and all attendees were asked to vote for their favorite dish from the potluck. The winning recipe was then published in the local school newsletter or everyone to learn and enjoy! The Madness Against Malaria campaign is an initiative of the Against Malaria Foundation. This is a unique international fundraising event based on the March Madness basketball tournament. Through this web-based campaign, the Haemoglobin Trotters (Touro’s team) is competing with other teams around the world to see who can raise the most funds to combat malaria. On Feb 28, 2008 the top 64 teams were selected and pitted against each other, knockout style mirroring the NCAA basketball tournament. The winner of the “Mad Bowl” will receive the malaria cup and the Malaria Prize will be awarded to the team that raises the highest number of LLIN’s (long lasting insecticidal nets). In the first round, Hemoglobin Trotters come in at number 8 worldwide; now is the second round against Univ of Southern California, we hosted a bake sale fundraiser, raising another $210 and on April 22nd, we are hosting are 2nd Global Potluck for the cause.

Lessons/suggestions organize the recipe lists better to avoid overlap; also, it would be beneficial to provide food categories with a limit (e.g. 10 salads, 10 appetizers etc) to increase the variety and diversity of the buffet.
