| Summary of project | UVA SOM's AMSA chapter sponsored the 2nd Annual Medical School Pancake Breakfast on December 1st, World AIDS Day. Over $1500 was raised benefitting Building Tomorrow: Destination Kampala, a grassroots organization begun by a medical student at UVA. The organization seeks to raise funds to build schools in impoverished areas in Kampala, Uganda and benefits many vulnerable children severely impacted by HIV/AIDS. In addition, Emily Sloan, UVA's World AIDS Fellow, collaborated with the breakfast to educate medical students about the health worker shortage in Africa and the adverse affects it has on the helth system. Students could participate in a letter writing campaign or simply get information about the issues at hand. The event brought together students, faculty, and staff of both UVA Health System as well as the University at large and gained outstanding local media coverage. We look forward to being a part of the event again next year! |
