| Summary of project | Minority, women, low-income, and at-risk student populations are disproportionately represented within the health sciences. This project addressed the issue by encouraging students at one local high school whose demographics represented these populations to aspire opportunities available through higher education, with a focus on pursuing the health sciences. Pre-medical students implemented a one-hour presentation to high school students consisting of three components: 1) A power point presentation highlighting the importance and benefits of higher education pursuits, particularly in the health sciences, as well as available resources such as pre-college programs that will help with such endeavors; 2) Q & A panel discussion with pre-medical students speaking about personal experiences pursuing higher education within the health sciences; and 3) An essay contest that provides high school students the opportunity to reflect on what was learned from the presentation and that provides a scholarship to be used for higher educational purposes. |

| Lessons/suggestions | We would like to target more schools and increase the presentation time to enable us to enhance our presentation by including an icebreaker and a step-by-step timeline of the preparation/application process for college and medical school (emhpasis will be placed on college vs. medical information since that would be the next step in education after high school). We also noticed that our pre-medical student speakers were all from different backgrounds and took different walks in life to get to where they are now (preparing for medical school) and we feel that it will be important to continue to have this variety to encourage high school students to continue their education past the high school level. |
| ADDITIONAL COMMENTS | |
| Comments | Overall this was a great start for the first time completing the project. We would love to reach more schools and students, and raise more money through fundraising to cover the cost of resources and scholarship. |
