Summary of project Global AIDS Action Week: activities and speakers open to all students and staff of UT Southwestern and Parkland Memorial Hospital. This year, we have several activities planned spanning the week of March 27-March 31.

From noon-1:00 on three days of the week we will provide speakers (a researcher who studies US funding for national and global AIDS programs; a physician who cares for PLWA; and an epidemiologist to talk about the AIDS epidemic locally/globally). Day 4 will include a panel of students who have participated in international AIDS work and will discuss their experiences. The final lunch meeting will be a recap of the weeks events with discussion on ways to Take Action Now to get involved in fighting the epidemic.

To add a further sense of continuity to the week, on 3-4 evenings of the week (from 5:00-7:00 p.m.), we will screen films in our lecture halls, free to anyone who would like to attend. Our current plans are to show "A Closer Walk", "Rent", and “Pandemic: Facing AIDS”.

As an interactive component to the week, we will create a poster board set-up with images, statistics, and children's art from Bryan's House, a local HIV/AIDS-centered youth shelter. We will also create a “slam board” for students to express their opinions on subjects related to GAAW.

We will also organize two days of volunteer work during the week at Bryan's House. There will also be a legislative component to the week involving an in-district meeting.
