NEW LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE:
PHARMACEUTICAL POLICY LEADERS
IN MEDICINE PROGRAM
September 7-10, 2007 (Fri-Mon)
AMSA Office - Reston, VA
Supported in part by Rockefeller Family Fund and Consumers Union.
APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED: JULY 16, 2007
We are looking for twenty physicians-in-training with the potential to become the leading change agents of their generation to improve pharmaceutical policy. This four-day Institute, organized by the AMSA Foundation in collaboration with Duke University's Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, will provide intensive training and interaction with some of the leading changemakers, researchers and journalists reporting on pharmaceutical policy.
- How does a public interest group petition the FDA and CMS over a pharmaceutical or medical device that never should have been approved?
- What is the evidence and the context behind the $800 million figure for bringing a new drug to market?
- How does an investigative journalist dig for the "truth" and sort through the complexity of those findings on a pharmaceutical policy?
- How might you track industry contributions to your Congressional representative and make transparent conflict of interest in how he or she represents your District?
- Where does the money trail from the pharmaceutical industry lead, and how has it influenced U.S. government policy abroad on access to essential medicines for developing countries?
- Ever wondered how Congressional hearings are put together for a controversy like Avandia?
- Do you want to make a difference on pharmaceutical promotion in your medical school or hospital? with twenty or so committed colleagues?
Work with your colleagues to plan advocacy on these issues. Develop a network of colleagues who share this vision of professionalism. Institute alumnae will be eligible to compete for small seed grants for local projects. The Medical Letter and Consumer Union's Best Buy Drugs have contributed resource materials for participants.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Any allopathic or osteopathic medical school student or resident enrolled in U.S. allopathic and osteopathic medical schools and residency programs interested in learning advocacy skills to affect the medicine-pharmaceutical industry relationship should consider applying.
