Resources for 4th Year Students

From choosing electives to booking a hotel on the interview trail, AMSA is here to help with all aspects of your 4th year and transition into residency.

4TH YEAR

International Experiences
Our popular resource list of international clinical sites accepting U.S. medical students is one of several sites on the International Health Opportunities Page. You'll find information on courses, study tours and even funding sources.

Humanistic Elective in alternative medicine, Activism and Reflective Transformation (HEART) is an accredited, residential clerkship for 4th year medical students. During the month, physicians-in-training will gain an introductory fund of knowledge in humanism, complementary and alternative medicine, social activism, and community organizing skills within a community.

FREIDA database and the Match
Check out the online Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA) as you think about the Match. Speaking of the Match, you may be familiar with a lawsuit filed against the Match. AMSA takes no position on the lawsuit and is not a sponsor, though we have worked hard for many years to improve the Match. Find out more about AMSA's position on the NRMP lawsuit.

Residency Assessments
Fellow AMSA members review their residency program or residency interview experience.

AMSA's Primer on Physician Collective Bargaining
As you think about being part of a housestaff, what are the relevant issues surrounding unionization? Can residents form a union? Should they? AMSA's primer on the issues may help.

Pharmaceutical Industry Influence on Prescribing
AMSA is concerned with the influence of pharmaceutical marketing strategies on physician prescribing practices. In brief, AMSA believes that evidence, not marketing, should determine pharmaceutical product indications and selections. We hope our resources may be of help as you consider your own choices about gifts, samples and information sources.

Resident Work Hour Resources
Resident work hours have been an AMSA priority because they impact patient safety (24 hours of wakefulness mirrors a 0.10% blood alcohol level), resident wellness (physician divorce rates are one measure of the problem), and the physician-patient relationship (as patients stand between doctors and sleep).

Developing Leadership in Public Health
AMSA has been awarded a $2.5 million contract from the Bureau of Health Professions Division of Medicine and Dentistry, a division of The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. Over the next three years, 60 residents and 60 faculty will participate in leadership training.

FINANCIAL PLANNING

AMSA GoldOption® Line of Credit Program, through a partnership with AMSA and Bank of America, offers credit lines up to $35,000 for medical students and residents.

AMSA/Bank of America WorldPoints® MasterCard®

Geico Auto Insurance Discounts are as popular for residents as they are for medical students.

STAY INFORMED AS YOU ENTER RESIDENCY

When you joined AMSA, you became a member not only for medical school, but you also became eligible for FREE graduate membership. Just keep us informed of your address information, and we'll help you stay informed during residency, as only AMSA's independent voice can.
