THE HEALTH OF RURAL AMERICA (1 OF 3)

Generally, rural areas have a larger proportion of children and elderly along with a higher number of families living in poverty than their urban counterparts. However, the demographics of one rural community may be vastly different from another.

Some rural areas have higher populations of African-Americans, while others may be composed primarily of Hispanic migrant workers, non-Hispanic whites, or Native Americans. In addition, within each of these populations there also may be a variety of racial, ethnic or cultural subpopulations.
