BARRIERS TO RURAL HEALTH CARE (12 OF 12)

  • The perceived lack of confidentiality by people in rural areas causes some to avoid or refuse health services that may be associated with stigmatizing situations and conditions. Therefore, patients may forego certain services such as HIV testing, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, adolescent prenatal care, and treatment for behavioral or mental health issues to avoid the criticism of fellow community members.

  • Rural populations of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds may hold differing views of disease, pain and illness. Therefore, it is not uncommon for patients in rural areas to have a higher confidence in home remedies or folk healers.
