LACK OF HEALTH INSURANCE
(12 OF 13)

State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

SCHIP was enacted to provide states with $40 billion in federal funds to cover low-income children. Children may also be covered through their parent’s insurance plans. When children reach the age of 18, or leave college, they usually lose public benefits or coverage under their parent’s health insurance plan.

Nearly 24% of low-income children remain uninsured even after implementation of SCHIP.
