Clinical Information Technology Internship

In the summer of 2008, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Foundation, in collaboration with Perot Systems, will be offering an internship in Clinical Information Technology for one selected medical student. The internship will be hosted by Perot Systems, which serves as the largest information technology outsourcing company in healthcare in the world. The location of this assignment will be at a client facility focusing on one or more of the following items; the implementation of inpatient EMR; the implementation of an outpatient EHR; and/or the appropriate uses of technology in the management of patient care.

This exciting program will select one medical student out of an applicant pool of candidates and provide hands-on experience in the assessment, design, delivery and clinician adoption of health IT systems.

To learn more about Perot Systems, please visit www.perotsystems.com.

As a CIT Intern you will:

  • Participate in clinical transformation projects as a member of the Perot team.
  • Learn effective approaches to clinical transformation--including needs assessment, clinical systems design, worker preparedness, clinical adoption techniques and implementation.
  • Consult with clinicians related to their adoption of information technologies.
  • Will have an assigned physician mentor who will assist in developing specific internship goals and will monitor the intern's progress throughout the internship.
  • Perform as a member of the Perot team on other related activities, as required. At the conclusion of the internship, the student will be expected to submit a paper/project based on some facet of his or her experience and be prepared to exhibit as a poster presentation for AMSA. The CIT Internship provides hands-on experience in the assessment, design, delivery and clinician adoption of health IT systems. No prior information technology experience is required.

Stipend:
Interns will be provided support as part of their participation in the program and will receive a stipend of $2,100 for the six-week internship to assist in covering their living expenses. In addition, Perot Systems will assist with the arrangement of temporary housing.
