Welcome to AMSA's Primary Care Specialty Forum

Welcome to AMSA's Primary Care Interest Group!

When you hear the phrase "primary care," what comes to mind? It is a buzzword that we as medical and pre-medical students hear quite frequently in terms of ranking the nation's top medical schools or encouraging us to enter primary care as a field -- but what does it mean and why is it important? Even medical organizations and professional societies each seem to have their own particular take on what primary care is and is not, based on what kinds of care are provided to patients, by which individual(s), and in what setting(s).

The goal of the primary care interest group is to provide the forum in which we can all begin to explore what primary care means for us as individuals and for our future patients. During the year, we will provide monthly topics for discussion to serve as starting points for our conversations on the listserv. In addition, we will be updating this website to provide you with the resources, references, and toolkits necessary for educating your friends and yourself about this topic, especially as part of AMSA's National Primary Care Week.

Thank you for your interest! - Jonathan and Damian

RESOURCES

BOOKS TO PROMOTE PRIMARY CARE DISCUSSIONS

The Social Transformation of American Medicine
Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize in American History.

A Textbook of Family Medicine
"This is undoubtedly the most important publication on the discipline of family medicine, but more to the point, the concept of patient-centered care [proposed in the book] will recast medical care. This revolution, thanks to Dr. McWhinney, is well under way around the world."

Lynn Carmichael, M.D., Chair Emeritus, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Miami School of Medicine

Doctoring: The Nature of Primary Care Medicine
"Doctoring is a contribution of unexpected breadth--iconoclastic in conception and rich in insight. One can only hope that its words resonate in the minds of the nation's policy planners and in the hearts of our primary-care doctors."

Jerome E. Groopman, The Wall Street Journal

Big Doctoring in America: Profiles in Primary Care
“In the words of GPs and other generalized caregivers, the author identifies the rewards and hassles of this type of practice. This theme has been treated in a more scholarly manner in several other publications, such as Promoting Human Wellness; however, Mullan's work, aimed at the general reader, underscores an important issue in American healthcare and makes a compelling statement. For larger public libraries.”
