The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training. Founded in 1950, AMSA is a student-governed, non-profit organization committed to representing the concerns of medical students and future physicians. With more than 68,000 members, AMSA is committed to improving medical training as well as advancing the profession of medicine. AMSA focuses on four strategic priorities, including universal healthcare, disparities in medicine, diversity in medicine and transforming the culture of medical education. Today, AMSA continues its commitment to improving medical training and the nation's health.

Organizational Structure: The organization is entirely student-governed, overseen by a Board of Trustees. Policy is determined by House of Delegates. Chapters exist at every medical school in the United States and many abroad.

  • AMSA was originally founded by the American Medical Association. In 1968, the organization cut ties and became independent.
  • The membership has contributed over 10 million hours of community service.
  • AMSA established the 1st nationally discounted loan program available to med students
  • AMSA was 1st national medical organization to take a stance on universal health care
  • AMSA petitioned Occupational and Safety Health Administration in 2001 and introduced federal legislation in 2002, 2003 and 2005 to improve resident physician working conditions and reduce medical errors.
  • AMSA successfully petitioned changes to the Match, including the algorithm and contract disclosures.
  • AMSA Executive Director Emeritus Paul R. Wright has received many prestigious industry awards, including Physicians for a National Health Program Lifetime Achievement and Modern Healthcare's 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.
