5th Annual Medical Education Leadership Institute
Training Tomorrow's Teachers Today is a five-day program developed by the American Medical Student Association's (AMSA) Medical Education Action Committee and the University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS). The program is intended to provide practical teaching and leadership skills to AMSA members interested in academic medicine. At UMMS, you can expect to learn skills that will help you develop effective teaching skills and methods, be a good bedside teacher during your residency, make an impact on curricular reform at your medical school, and orient you to aspects of medical education that may prepare you for a career in academic medicine. The program will also include time for reflection and networking. As part of the AMSA application process, students will need to present a plan for a medical education project. Students should include plans for the project's implementation upon returning to their respective institutions. Students are encouraged to work within their medical school's leadership and faculty to identify curricular topics on which the project would focus. Selected students will convene at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor - one of the nation's most respected centers of medical education - to participate in five days of student-centered, skills building training, led by a team of top faculty from the university's Medical Education Department. All course sessions will be scheduled during the day. Courses will center on the following content sections:

Furthermore, students should have already discussed their proposed project, or ideas for a project, with a member of the faculty or administration at their medical school. This would include identifying existing related projects in your school Projects completed by previous participants included creating an elective course for medical students in professionalism and advocacy and integrating the use of videotaping as a teaching tool.
