  • Transgender Talks Lecture - Spring
Transgender Talks is a 2-day event in which all students are invited to learn about the little-known field of transgender health. We are inviting Dr. Maddie Deutsch, a transgendered ER doctor, and Jessie Jacobson, a transgendered psychotherapist, to come share their stories of being transgendered and working in the medical and health professions, as well as to discuss how we as future health care providers can better serve the transgendered population. The first day is dedicated to an introductory lecture that will discuss the basic issues that transgender individuals must face in our health care system.

  • National Coming Out & Ally Day - October
To increase awareness about coming out as a person in medicine and to celebrate National Coming Out Day, we host a National Coming Out & Ally Day Celebration at the Keck School of Medicine (after fall exam week). This event is held on the Quad during lunchtime, so we play music and sell In N Out Burger to offset the cost of the event and to attract people from all over campus. Last year, we handed out custom-made event pens and "Straight But Not Narrow" pins, had a poster for attendees to sign, and hosted information tables. The Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team ran their own table, and AMSA/MedGLO officers ran tables for HRC and AIDS Project LA. The week prior to the event, we distributed rainbow ribbon pins to each student's MDL box and asked student to wear the pins to show their support for LGBT providers and patients. Students wearing their pins received a free drink on the day of the event. Weeks before the event, we also collected names for the HSC OUTlist, which was posted on the Quad the day of the event

  • LGBTI Health Matters - September
What does LGBTQIA mean? Kinsey scale? GayDar? What's the deal with gay men and crystal meth? Are lesbians more at risk for breast cancer? This well-promoted, lunch-providing discussion serves as an introduction to LGBTI health issues in America. It introduces the LGBT alphabet soup and health issues that affect the LGBTI community in general, as well as specific issues that disproportionately affect specific groups. The talk is geared toward all future physicians, regardless of orientation and identity.

  • Transgender Talks Q&A - Spring
    Contact: Dr. Maddie Deutsch
The second day of Transgender Talks is an open forum discussion in which students ask questions to our guests. Dr. Maddie Deutsch returned for a two-hour informal discussion with students.

  • LGBT Health Fairs - various

  • HIV Test Counseling Talk & Panel - November
We host the Education Director at the Center for Health Justice, and a panel HIV counselors, many of whom are themselves HIV positive, to discuss effective and professional HIV test counseling, share their personal experiences with HIV diagnosis, and answer audience questions pertaining to this tricky and intimidating topic.
