UCLA Selected Among Top 20 Best Campuses for LGBT Students

August 1, 2006 - UCLA was recognized as one of the 20 Best Campuses for LGBT students and will be included in The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, the first comprehensive campus guide to highlight the 100 most LGBT-friendly campuses in the United States. UCLA's positive environment, programs and services and LGBT student coalitions were cause for the distinction.

"We are extremely honored that our campus was selected and recognized as an LGBT-friendly campus," said Dr. Ronni Sanlo, director of the UCLA LGBT Campus Resource Center. "Our campus leaders have worked tirelessly to create a positive environment for all of our students and this distinction emphasizes the importance of providing necessary support to meet all students' needs - including LGBT students."

The book, due for release August 1, 2006, profiles 100 colleges and universities from across the country that offer resources and create a positive living and learning environment for LGBT students. Campus PrideNet, the leading national organization for LGBT and ally student leaders, with support from a team of expert LGBT professionals from the National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education, developed the criteria and a questionnaire for nominations to gather feedback from current LGBT students, faculty, and staff regarding personal experiences and opinions about their campus.

After receiving nominations from 680 campuses and conducting more than 5,500 online interviews, 100 campuses were selected for the book based on institutional policies, commitment and support, academic life, housing, student life, counseling and health services, campus safety, and recruitment and retention efforts. The list of 100 is broken down in multiple indexes such as region, state, type of institution and size. Individual campus profiles include information on size, tuition, admission application deadlines, gay-affirmative policies, events, LGBT student groups and resources, housing for LGBT students and more.

"The top 100 colleges and universities profiled in The Advocate College Guide lead the way for the rest of higher education to be LGBT-friendly. These campuses take to heart the value of supporting all students...what better way for a campus to come out as LGBT-Friendly?" said Shane L. Windmeyer, executive director of Campus PrideNet and author of The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE STATEMENT

We, the faculty and students of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, in the spirit of understanding and unity, believe that a diverse student body is an integral part of our medical education and our development as compassionate caregivers. We acknowledge the history of diversity at our institution and understand the responsibilities we must assume in becoming members of the School of Medicine.

Foremost is the fostering of an environment where ideas can be freely exchanged without fear of judgment or persecution. We accept the charge to learn from our peers about the variety of backgrounds we represent, as well as embrace the opportunity to share our beliefs and values with one another. We agree to maintain the highest degree of decorum and professionalism while discussing our commonalities and differences.

By adopting this philosophy towards our diversity, we hope to ensure our development as culturally competent physicians who will ably serve the variety of patients entrusted to our care.

LGBT Events

  • Annual National LGBT Health Awareness Week - March 2008
    Contact: Neil Vyas
A week long series of speakers, videos, and activities dedicated to presenting health care issues pertaining to the LGBT community to students and others in the medical school.

  • Minority Health Conference - 10/20/07
    Contact: Neil Vyas
The 2007 Minority Health Conference at UCLA addresses minority health disparities and raises awareness of minority health issues in Southern California. The event is organized by the UCLA, Drew, and USC medical school chapters of APAMSA, LMSA, MedGLO and SNMA, and is a joint effort to present Asian American, Latino, LGBT, and African American health collectively as one voice. The unique motivation behind this collaboration is to synergize the work of our minority organizations, all of which promote parallel causes for different ethnic groups. Goals of the conference include educating students and physicians on the critical issues behind minority health, and providing a forum to discuss the barriers facing physicians and patients in minority communities.

LGBT Resources

  • UCLA LGBT Campus Resource Center
Though we started in a closet - didn't we all - in Haines in 1995, you can find the center nowadays in suite B36 in the Student Activities Center. Thanks to the support of the university, generous donors, and grants, the now much larger UCLA LGBT Campus Resource Center now includes the David Bohnett Cyber Center and an extensive library collection. Feel free to come check out our center whether you just want to hang out, check your e-mail, or watch one of our noontime movie showings.

  • Lambda Graduate Student Network
The Lambda Graduate Student Network (LGSN) exists to bring together UCLA's LGBT graduate students, faculty and staff through a range of social events in order to facilitate the formation of intellectually stimulating and diverse peer networks within and beyond the academic environment. Our focus is on creating fun and accessible social opportunities that cater to the busy lives of graduate students: many events will be on campus, and all events will be geared toward low cost and convenient scheduling. All interested UCLA graduate students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate! LGSN events during the academic year include:

The Fall Barbecue! Regular lunches Regular coffee hours Outdoor activities (even graduate students have to see the sunshine at some point) House parties, happy hours, museum trips, and other off-campus events LGSN also maintains a mailing list that is used for LGSN-related announcements.
