Welcome to Brown Univ Local LGBTPM Chapter
Mission
GLAAM is a student organization at Brown Medical School that is geared towards improving the healthcare for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning) people and is a place where LGBTQ medical students and their allies work together to make their voices heard in the medical community.
GLAAM recognizes three main themes in regard to the intersections between healthcare and LGBTQ concerns. First, there are specific health concerns more prevalent in the LGBTQ community which are often unknown to healthcare providers. Second, unbiased/unprejudiced healthcare is a right that is being violated for these patients. Thirdly, LGBTQ-identified healthcare providers face a different set of concerns than those being addressed by mainstream medical education.
GLAAM is dedicated to dialogue, advocacy, and action on these fronts.
Premed Applicant Information
Members of the Brown student group QueerMed enjoyed their first year working under a new name: Gays, Lesbians and Allies Advancing Medicine (GLAAM). The name reminds medical students that regardless of sexual orientation, they can be allies and active members of this organization. "Advancing Medicine" is a statement of purpose that embodies the group’s professional and advocacy-related goals.
This past year, GLAAM lived up to its name by participating in community outreach efforts including medical screening and counseling at local health fairs. GLAAM members engaged in structured conversations with physician mentors on caring for LGBTQ patients, selecting supportive residency programs, and finding allies within the medical community. A partnership with Lifelines Rhode Island, a local organization dedicated to people of transgender experience, was forged through GLAAM, and a training session on transgender issues was organized at the medical school. GLAAM welcomed all students to a National Coming Out Day celebration and organized social events that connected the group’s members with the greater Brown LGBTQ and ally community.
This coming year, GLAAM plans to explore developing a rapid HIV testing and counseling training program for medical students with the help of experienced providers. Members are also working with AMSA to develop an online guidebook for LGBTQ students applying to medical schools around the country. GLAAM also hopes to encourage students to volunteer at Lifelines as medical advocates and to continue building ties with area physicians as part of an LGBTQ mentor program.
