LGBT Human Sexuality Classroom Exercise

Turning faceless statistics into a visible impression

Heterosexism describes an ideological system that denies, denigrates, and stigmatizes any non-heterosexual form of behavior, identity, relationship, or community.

Homophobia is the irrational fear or hatred of homosexuals and homosexuality. Although often times found together, homophobia in our society is on the decline thanks to more public visibility of LGBT characters on television and film. Heterosexism, however, persists at almost every level of society as the politically correct form of homophobia.

Allies are straight individuals who believe LGBT people are equal human beings and openly accept their LGBT peers, friends and family exactly as they are. LGBT people embrace Allied friends with enthusiasm and we ask them to be our ADVOCATES, not necessarily activists.

Take the Heterosexist Challenge and see if you pass!

To help address heterosexism in the classroom, LGBTPM has created the Human Sexuality Classroom Exercise to help straight and gay medical students become concretely aware of the sexual diversity that exists in the human race, but is almost never visible in everyday life. We encourage AMSA members to administer the questionnaire during their Human Reproduction course. If there is not enough lecture time to accommodate inclusion of the entire exercise, the questionnaire can be easily distributed during passing time between lectures and then redistributed during the next passing time. You can then quickly review people's responses to 5-10 questions, making sure to include Question #18, which addresses sexual orientation.

    Human Sexuality Questionnaire

This survey is most appropriate for a first or second year students during a Human Sexuality Lecture in their Sexual Reproduction Course. Participants fill out the questionnaire following the directions listed below. The questionnaires are collected or turned in, shuffled and randomly redistributed. The moderator then reads each question aloud and the participants raise their hands to indicate the way their sheet (the redistributed one) is filled out. In this manner, participants gain a visually concrete appreciation of statistics and attitudes regarding human sexuality. This exercise should be followed by an informal discussion facilitated by a Faculty Physician.

*KEY: when reviewing responses, first say "everyone look at number X" and then read the question, asking the group to vote according to one of the responses.

If there is not enough lecture time during the Sexual Reproduction Course to accommodate inclusion of the entire exercise, the questionnaire can be easily distributed during passing time between lectures and then redistributed during the next passing time. You can then quickly review people's responses to 5-10 questions, making sure to include Question #18, which addresses sexual orientation. Suggested list of top 14 questions to review: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 27, 29 and 30.

*Although this is BEST done in the context of the sexual reproduction course in basic science years, it can be an effective exercise at ANY time as long as you explain the purpose of the exercise.
