A Medical Student Retreat for Humanistic Medicine
dates

AMSA's Humanistic Medicine Interest Group (HuMed) recognizes the need for medical students to find ways in which to balance the concentrated intellectual demands of academic work with the personal and spiritual needs to find meaning and inner direction. We also have the need to establish a strong sense of community support among our peers. It is only with this essential foundation of inner and outer balance that we can hope to become, and to model, being whole healers and compassionate physicians in the world.

With this focus in mind, we are continuing our series of ongoing retreats, with an emphasis on experiential learning and community building that will support the nurturing of the heart and soul of medical students, through deepening connection with our fellow students, with our own inner selves, and with the natural environment.

RETREAT GOALS
  • To bring together a variety of students from diverse backgrounds and medical schools for the open sharing in a safe place of our honest questions and concerns, where we may feel supported in our efforts to grow as individuals and learn as future physicians.

  • To explore the meaning of humanism in medicine and in our daily lives; To develop specific skills that we can utilize as physicians to better understand and help our patients in a compassionate and humanistic manner.

  • To provide the opportunity for students to renew mind, body, and spirit outside of the medical school environment and in close contact with the nature that surrounds us.

  • To strengthen our bonds as a national community of future physicians who share common humanistic ideals, intention, plans, and actions.

  • To teach specific techniques of "mind/body medicine" that promote relaxation and stress management, as well as mindfulness in daily life; To demonstrate and discuss the value of conscious cooking and healthy diet in the prevention and treatment of illness.

  • To create dialogue that leads to better understanding the interplay of science and intellect with spirit and healing in the physician's dual role as scientist and healer; To model leadership in the medical community of compassion and caring between medical colleagues as well as between physician and patient.

  • To express the humanistic medicine ideal through the creative arts of writing, poetry, music, and art; To inspire an ongoing body of creative work that can be shared through publication, in written form and/or on the web which expresses the heart of humanism in medicine.

  • To create a template for a retreat program that can be replicated and used to model the humanistic training of physicians in medical schools nationwide.
