vol. 23
November 2006 Edition
Communication
Somewhere between the desires to understand and to be understood arises the drive to communicate with others - our families, our peers, and our patients. Every patient has a picture to paint for you, but asking closed-ended questions boxes them into a paint-by-number. You might get the right idea, but it won't look quite right. Let them use their own language, their own brushstrokes, and you both will leave more satisfied.
"There are men who would quickly love each other if once they were speak to each other; for when they spoke they would discover that their souls had only separated by phantoms and delusions."
- Ernest Hello (1828-1885)
"A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
- Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
Note: This edition of The Healer's Voice includes a new "HuMed Is" section. It consists of quotes regarding what HuMed is to you. I hope that this will be a feature of future editions, but I need your help to make it possible, so let me know just what "HuMed Is" to you!
