Wednesday Will Fall
Eric Newman, University of Maryland, College Park, Premed
How must you leave me hanging now,
As all I've meant's bent forward?
When since the stars commenced their speech
My high life's stood on your word.
When for the past I've loaned my debts
To mark your future 'counters.
When for the present cost at rest
I've countershot love's mounters.
When time and tide are none the same,
When rhyme's reason has faltered,
When since the season's light began,
My ends have never altered.
When life is left for you to write,
When I still sharpen pencils,
When all you've penned thus far is wrong,
When will you switch utensils?
