A Surgeon's Prayer

Jasper James "JJ" Chen, University of Washington School of Medicine, MS3

I am a surgeon, God grant me the strength
To hold steadfastly to my true calling,
To fully comprehend its breadth and length,
To have persistence and long-suffering.

I am a mere mortal armed with my knife,
Whose surgical precision is the art
Of my forefathers and their chosen life,
Whose healing compassion stems from the heart.

I am an instrument of greater good;
Independent I am not in this task--
Have fellowship with my patient I would
Until there is no need to don my mask.

I am a healer of noble duty,
May I serve humankind with piety.
