Inner Space

by Sachin Jain, MS1; Rush Medical College

Ah Space!
Confined by nothing.
Not movement nor materialism,
Not expectations nor expression,
not time.

Uninterrupted stream of consciousness,
Free like a blissful hummingbird swimming
Through a starlit abyss with no destination,
No purpose, no reason to live,
Yet milking the sweet nectar out of every moment.

Stretching one's arms and legs and mind every which way,
Sprawled out upon a bed of daffodils with straddled legs and
Interlocked hands atop one's stomach,
Staring at a blank sapphire sky,
Watch the clouds orbit the earth.
The retreat from contemplating the meaning of life
To wondering what makes the sun yellow
To becoming hysterical with laughter about something long forgotten
within a split second.

When zero productivity means maximum efficiency.

Existing in a desert of verisimilitude,
Impeded by no fallacy whatsoever,
Viewing the surroundings with untinted spectacles,
The way God sees the world.

The luxury to scrutinize fine distinctions
Between two adjacent blades of grass
And to appreciate the microscopic life
That thrives amidst them.

A nirvana for the lover of all things,
Human, inanimate, whatever.
Anything goes. Nobody cares.
Like the space one finds at the eye of a storm
That is a bustling, overpopulated metropolitan city.

Infinite imagination…
Swimming from a shore to the farthest stretches of the horizon
While nestled eternally in solitary confinement.
Biking over rolling hills across the country
During a single blink of the eye.

Suffocated almost to the point of no return and then released
When death is only a single breath away,
Gasping for that first breath of air and knowing that there's more…

A baby Chihuahua tied to a broken leash,
not having to search for the missing half,
no longer tied to the obligation,
liberated from the servitude.

Living a life in one dimension,
Taking for granted anything within reach,
Owning a single plot of space would be the most spoiled existence.
Inner space.
Living life to the fullest,
within one's wildest dreams.
