The Pharmaceutical Industry: Don't Talk

There is some anecdotal evidence that commercial pressures cause scientists to withhold data or suppress publication of study results. Some delay in publication may be warranted in order to allow for patenting of intellectual property. However, as federal funding for research declines and the cost of engaging in research continues to rise, many investigators and institutions have increasingly turned towards corporate sources to fund their research agendas, often signing confidentiality agreements in the process. The question immediately arises: To what extent should commercial forces shape the pursuit of academic truth? Can a balance be struck between commercial interests on the one hand and academic freedom on the other?
