AMSA Global Health Scholars Program

AMSA's Global Health Action Committee presents:

The 2007-2008
Global Health Scholars Program

Confronting the needs of children around the world

We are no longer receiving applications for the 2007-2008 Global Health Scholars Program.

If you wish to still be involved, we would love to have you. Please email the Global Health Action Committee chair, Tanya Wansom with some of your areas of interest and she will be happy to help you get involved.

WHAT IS THE GLOBAL HEALTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM?

This comprehensive 8-month long program is designed to allow promising, motivated health professional students to develop advanced advocacy, communication, and critical thinking skills with which to effect change in global health.

The praxis-oriented curriculum will assist the Scholars in developing sophisticated ethical frameworks to comprehend global health priorities such that they can apply this framework to influence policy and create solutions addressing today's global health needs.

The Scholars will be guided through critical analyses of existing literature and policies on global health and human rights through structured readings and discussions with international leaders in the field. The Scholars will be given the opportunity to apply these frameworks to create meaningful, pragmatic solutions to a pertinent issue perpetuating global health disparities, and will be encouraged to apply advocacy and communication skills to fully develop their solutions.

This year, the Scholars will focus their work and activities related to: PEDIATRIC GLOBAL HEALTH

REQUIREMENTS

  • Conference calls with leaders in the field
  • Reading and reporting of two determined books
  • Organizing and judging national child essay contest on the meaning of health
  • Advocating in local community
  • Submission of article for Global Pulse
  • Education of peers on issue of choice
  • Final comprehensive open-source web based informational guide on Pediatric Global Health

SUPPORT

Every Scholar will be assigned a mentor to help guide them through the program’s requirements and expectations. These mentors bring with them experience in the elements of research, advocacy, clinical care, activism and praxis relevant to global health. The Global Health Scholar is also expected to utilize the many resources and people available within AMSA. These individuals include, but are not limited to the Global AIDS Fellow, the Legislative Affairs Director, the Director of Public Relations, as well as the Global Health Action Committee and AIDS Advocacy Network leaders.

The main contact for the Global Health Scholars will be Jose Lozada, the global Health Education and Networking Coordinator. Any questions regarding specific requirements, timeline, general connections to resources, etc. should initially be directed to him.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Health professional students with a focused interest in global health issues and in applying a scholarly approach to global health disparities. This program is designed to guide future leaders in global health and human rights, and thus aims to identify motivated, creative, thoughtful students. Because of the time commitment required, it is anticipated that most applicants will be in their pre-clinical years, but students of any year are encouraged to apply. The Global Health Scholar must be a member of AMSA at the start of the program.
