Presidential Candidate's Responses on World AIDS Day

Global AIDS is an important issue for you in the upcoming presidential election, so here's how you can educate yourself on each candidate's position on the U.S. role in fighting AIDS. Gay Men's Health Crisis put out a report, 2008 Presidential Candidates and HIV/AIDS, summarizing all of the presidential candidate's positions on global and domestic HIV/AIDS issues as of November 30th, 2007 (the day before World AIDS Day). This documents is very intensive and detailed, so if you want a quicker overview check out the summary chart (scroll down and click on "quick chart"). For another, more compact analysis of presidential candidate's positions also go to AIDS Vote candidate analysis to see each candidates response to their survey regarding global and domestic AIDS issues, based on the 08StopAIDS platform.

Since the purpose of our AMSA rallies and call-ins before World AIDS Day was to hear the presidential candidates commit to our three demands, knowing what they actually said is quite important. Many of the candidates did issue statements regarding the fight against global AIDS and how they as president would address the pandemic worldwide on World AIDS Day.

  • Of course AMSA can't take all the credit for the vast improvement in the presidential candidate's stances on fighting global AIDS over the past few months, but we should take a moment to step back and recognize all our hard work. Whether it was the Trick or Treatment rally in Philadelphia on October 30th which motivated Clinton and Obama to come out with AIDS platforms, countless birddoggers across the country who always had a question about global AIDS ready at candidates' public appearances, or the call-in to candidates which asked for the candidates' statements on World AIDS Day listed above, our efforts have definitely paid off. Congratulations to all of you that helped out and thanks for your effort, keep it up!
