Fostering health justice activism in our nation's communities

Washington, D.C. and Reston, VA
January 17-20, 2008

Interested in Community Health and Public Health?

Want to visit Washington, D.C. and see public health in action?

Thinking of pursuing an MPH but want to get a sense of the field first?

Trying to make a difference in the health of your own community?

Then consider applying to AMSA's 8th Annual Community & Public Health Institute.

Some of the amazing opportunities at past CPHIs include:

  • Visits to the Department of Health and Human Services, the American Public Health Association, an urban public health clinic, and the US House of Representatives to see public health practitioners in action…

  • Intensive, personalized instruction on public health models/frameworks from experienced public health educators and training on using these models in your own community health projects

  • Hands-on interactive sessions with AMSA staff and student leadership on public speaking, lobbying, self-care and other skills

  • Forums regarding how to incorporate the pursuit of public health education and public health practice into a career in medicine

  • Free time for sightseeing in our nation's capital and networking with other like-minded medical students from around the country

  • An opportunity to further develop a project/idea for implementation in your community

LOGISTICS

  • Cost of CPHI: FREE!!! (with your school's commitment to fund your transportation to DC)

  • Arrive in DC/Virginia Wednesday night and leave Sunday afternoon.

  • Travel within DC and food/lodging is provided by AMSA.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to be an AMSA member to apply?
You do not need to be an AMSA member to apply, but you must be an AMSA member to attend. You may, if you'd like, wait to see if you are selected to attend and then become an AMSA member. However, if you're interested in community and public health, I'd suggest you check out all that AMSA has to offer and reconsider becoming a member regardless of whether or not you attend the Institute. Join now!

May I submit the application electronically?
Please do. You may submit the application to ramshors@bcm.edu. If you can scan the dean's letter, you may send that electronically as well.

If I submit the application by mail, does it need to be received or postmarked by November 23?
Applications sent by mail should be postmarked by November 23. Please also send an email to confirm that you have sent your application, so it isn't lost in the mail.

Is the institute only for medical students?
The Community and Public Health Institute is open to all AMSA members to attend, and all who are eligible for AMSA membership may apply. Please see the membership page for more details. As the institute is targeted for those pursuing an MD/DO who would like to pursue a career in public health, applications from medical students and premedical students will be given priority.
