Paul R. Wright Award for Excellence in Medical Education

PAUL R. WRIGHT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION

Revitalizing Professionalism in Medical Education

Deadline: December 31, 2007

Medical students from the University of Minnesota are presented the 2005 Paul R. Wright Award for Excellence in Medical Education.

In 2002, AMSA introduced the PharmFree Campaign to educate and train its members to professionally and ethically interact with the pharmaceutical industry. The campaign is a national movement to limit the access and influence of pharmaceutical companies and their representatives at medical schools and academic medical centers. Throughout the years, many medical institutions have emerged as leaders who have joined with AMSA to seek out evidence-based and unbiased sources of information rather than to rely on pharmaceutical industry representatives for "education."

This year, AMSA invites all medical institutions that have taken the initiative to limit pharmaceutical influence on their campuses and have thus begun to revitalize professionalism in medical education.

AMSA believes in providing the highest quality care to our patients through evidence-based medicine and would like to recognize an outstanding medical institution that has taken the proactive steps toward that goal for its students.

ABOUT THE AWARD

In 1992, AMSA established the Paul R. Wright Award for Excellence in Medical Education to recognize a medical school, chosen by the nation's medical students, whose exemplary achievements in medical education foster the development of socially responsive physicians.

The award is named in honor of Paul R. Wright, who led AMSA as its executive director since 1970. He was named Executive Director Emeritus in 2006 and is currently serving as AMSA's Interim Executive Director. Each year, the focus of the award changes to reflect a different dimension of medical education. The emphasis of the 2008 award is Revitalizing Professionalism in Medical Education.

The award will be presented at AMSA's 58th Annual Convention, "healthcare (r)evolution," which is being held March 12-16, 2008, in Houston, Texas. The winning medical school will receive $2,500 towards convention travel and registration.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application deadline has now passed. If you have any questions about the award, please contact AMSA's Director of Public Relations at (703) 620-6600, ext. 207, or by email at pr@amsa.org.
