Student Driven Curriculum Reform
Matthew Stull, Chair, Committee on Medical Education
How many times have you heard (or even said): “Medical school isn’t teaching me the things I really need to know to be a good doctor!” If this sounds familiar than its time to step up and be the driving force behind curriculum reform at your institution. This interactive workshop will give you a primer on how to design and/or reform your school’s curriculum. By the end of this session you should have the knowledge and skills to design a piece of curriculum ready to go in front of your school’s Curriculum Committee. Over the course of this workshop we will provide you with a model to design curriculum to ensure that you do not miss a step and that will provide you with a solid educational program. We will also discuss the importance of framing and receiving buy-in from institutions and administrations and build your skills in this area.

Communication: Enhancing Patient Outcomes and Decreasing Risks
Gail Harris, RN, MS, CPHRM, Sr. Clinical Risk Management Consultant, Medical Protective
This program will help participants understand how people become patients and then possibly transition into becoming a plaintiff. Since there is usually a chain of events leading to a lawsuit it is imperative that healthcare providers identify these concerns early in the doctor-patient relationship. Once behaviors are identified, then implementing strategies for changing that behavior becomes the next step to discouraging litigation. All forms of communication, written, verbal and non-verbal play an important role in developing a positive doctor-patient partnership that impacts risk mitigation. This interactive session will include case analysis and outline some of the predictors for medical malpractice claims. The program will also outline the types of patient that are likely to sue and discuss strategies to improve management of challenging encounters.

Human Trafficking: Modern-day Slavery
Monica Carrasco, Chair of the Los Angeles County Unity Coalition
Human trafficking involves forcing, deceiving or coercing a person in order to exploit them for labor or sexual purposes. People are trafficked into the United States to work in prostitution, pornography, sweatshops, construction, housekeeping, agriculture and restaurants. The federal government estimates that there are as many new victims trafficked into the United States per year as there are murders; less than one percent of trafficking cases end in convictions. A representative from the Los Angeles County Unity Coalition is joining us to give an introduction to the issue, and to inform us of what we should know and how we can help as physicians-in-training.
