amsa's 52nd annual convention
Power of the People
March 6-10, 2002 * Houston, TX

AMSA's 52nd Annual ConventionThe spirit of the American Medical Student Association's (AMSA) 52nd Annual Convention is probably best characterized by a rallying cry voiced by hundreds of physicians-in-training as they marched through the streets of Houston, Texas, to a local park: "Ain't no power like the power of the people, 'cause the power of the people don't stop!"

For five days (March 6-10), from start to finish, AMSA's meeting was marked by the power of the people. Beginning with an impromptu war protest inside the hotel and climaxing with a rally for health-care justice at Antioch Park in downtown Houston, student activism reigned in the Lone Star State.

Under the theme "Give Us Justice! Give Us Health!" physicians-in-training discussed immigrant and migrant health, universal health care, residency preparation, pharmaceutical marketing, spirituality, global diseases, mental illness, prostitution, war, bioterrorism and students' experiences with the tragic events of Sept. 11. The variety of topics not only reflected the diversity of AMSA's membership, but it also provided an ample forum for the more than 1,000 convention attendees to let their voices be heard on the important issues on their minds and in their hearts.
