The power of storytelling has both graced and amazed the human race for years. Whether to paint a picture for the imagination to allow ones dreams run wild, to now offering support to medical discoveries and patient improvement, its power is to never be underestimated.
A new program offered to dementia patients through Penn State, students working to achieve their medical degree offer support to these patients through storytelling in a group setting. Providing images to set the scene, the student’s encourage the patients to create a story within their imagination, and communicate with others in the group. Offering a creative and feel good environment for these patients is showing that by taking the pressure off, and allowing them to feel “normal,” is beneficial in their everyday life. Offering students, and these patients, with this opportunity has allowed them to appreciate this “disease,” and see it in a new light.
